Books

Bill: Since finding this book a few years ago I keep re-reading sections. I'm always learning something useful. What I love about this book is that it's filled with practical suggestions for how to be yourself, speak your mind, and be civil.

"Choosing Civility: The Twenty-five Rules of Considerate Conduct" by P.M. Forni.

Intermediated conferences from DLTQ 12.06.05 Blog posting following Les Blogs, 12.05. Back-channels at conferences. How do they affect the relationship between those on the stage and the audience?

Quick Time Movie of Mena Trott at Les Blogs, 2005 from DLTQ 12.06.05

Be civil, asshole from Rough Type 12.08.05 Mena Trott and Ben Metcalf at Les Blogs, 12.05

Backchannel is back Burningbird 12.07.05 Some folks were upset at Mena for calling Ben an asshole during her session on civility. I think she was just being disruptive, and since backchannelers live for being disruptive, they should commend her rather than condemn her.

Mailing list discussion: internet or not at the next Mind Camp? MakeYouGoHmmm.com 12.08.06 I think an IRC channel where people are saying all the things they can’t say because they don’t have a microphone is a useful, valuable part of the conversation

Every story has two points of view Savlor videoblogging 12.08.05 Video of Mena Trott and Ben Metcalf at Les Blogs, 12.05

I Can't "Hey"? NetMannersBlog 03.07.06 I was actually scolded that I shouldn't start my eTips with "Hey, Jane" and that Dear or Hello would be more appropriate. Says who? As anyone who e-mails me will tell you, I e-mail back as though we already know each other -- I set the tone of being approachable.

e-mint flaming issue The Association of Online Community Professionals (eming.org)

Speaking to Me: Terms and Conditions Tom Peyer on Slate/360 blog, 10.26.05 You agree, through the act of speaking to Tom Peyer, that you will not transmit any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, unlawful, harmful, hateful, harassing, threatening, abusive, vulgar, obscene, repetitive, dull, shrill, unfunny, or otherwise objectionable.

Mena Trott Implodes Onstage. News at 11 Mena's Corner 12.07.05

Where is the Netiquette? Chris' Insytes 12.08.05 I am glad Mena confronted Ben, but wish she would have done it better. I also have a lot of respect for Ben standing up as he did, but I wish he could have just said why he felt Mena's presentation was Bullshit.

Conference or party? The setting must be chosen... mopsos 12.06.05 It is always interesting to witness an outburst of violence generated by conflicting egos. Mena was on stage, as the founder of an outstanding start-up company. She thus was exposed and was careful about what she said to an audience of clients, prospects or investors. Ben was in the audience, as one of the many bloggers present. He wanted some attention and thus was playing wise guy on the backchannel...

The Les Blogs Name-Calling Oliver Thylmann - Thoughts 12.09.05 First of all, it is not so bad...Mena did her talk and it was around a touchy subject... The part which gets all the interest is the time Mena said Ben acted like an asshole the entire first day on the conference in the backchannel. Ben of course doesn't think he was. He was harsh though but that might just be how he is.

Reflecting on Les Blogs 2.0 NevOn 12.07.05 The backchannel A playground for kids. Juvenile with puerile content but a great temperature-tester that gives you a real sense of what people feel about what's going on in a conference at a particular time.

Handbags at Les Blogs 2.0 Without Prejudice 12.07.05 If companies like Six Apart are going to put on commercial conferences with a backchannel, then this is what is going to happen.

Talking Trash at Les Blogs Naked Conversations 12.09.05 This chat stuff is part of free speech and those who enjoy it should certainly snark away. But, why on Earth it was being published tp upstage of each speaker remains beyond me. Even if it were favorable commentary, posting it behind the speakers is a visual distraction.

Backchannel Smackdown continues: Is it really honesty vs. civility? Worker Bees Blog 12.09.05 People cite a false trade-off, "honesty vs civility." That's the easy way out. And one in which I don't believe.
